10000 students yelled: “Anti-Capitalist” and sang “Education is a right, not a privilege” on the rhythm of “London bridge is falling down”. The march assembled at Malet Street at around 12noon and marched round Russell Square, down Kingsway to the Strand, and then to Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and ended at Parliament by 4pm.
Organised by:
The National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts
The Young Greens
The Student Assembly Against Austerity
Supported by the National Union of Students (NUS)
The demonstration took place under the banner of ‘Free Education: No fees. No cuts. No debt’.
The move marks an escalation of opposition to the government’s programme of fees and privatisation in education and will provide a spark for further action.
